The jib boom is a busy place. There are a
lot of controls and not much room for some conveniences. This boom is new to
Delta and here is what we will use:
Forestay mount to the boom
Downhaul
Mast
rake
Jib
Swivel adjustable Guide
Jib
swivel mount and connection to the rack
Sheetline adjuster
Topping
lift adjuster
Sheetline adjustable guide
Outhaul
adjuster at the clew
End
fitting and topping lift guide
We will try to keep the boom length short of the
bow! That is a limiting specification.
Boom Construction
There is nothing new here after going through the
main boom process...just more of it. Cut the boom to 490 mm and clean it up. The
subject items will be from the forward end of the boom to the aft. The forward
and aft inserts will be installed last.
Forward Insert Mount
Install this last for convenience. This part
will anchor the jibstay wire, hold the counter balance and provide a return for
the jib downhaul to the adjuster. The top has a pre-drill hole for a pin or screw. A pin is
best and a shaft for a 2-56 threaded rod worked here. The holes were drilled
so that the pin needed to be forced on. It was trimmed and is going nowhere.
The counter balance will in installed in pre-tuning. When this is installed
pre-drill a hole for a #2 sheet metal screw under the boom and into the
fitting shaft to secure it.
Jib Swivel Guide
Slide the "Sheet" attach point track on the
boom with the guide aft as shown. We will attach this to the deck later
in the rigging. This guide is generally fixed once the sail plan has been
through pre-tuning and some experience in the water. The adjuster is to
allow convenience in finding of the right spot for balance and position.
Downhaul Adjuster
Slide on a track sheet hook pointed forward
behind the swivel guide. We will connect this to the tack grommet on the jib
during the rigging. Tension stiffens the luff, to some extent the leech and
creates more stiffness to the camber of the sail relative to the outhaul
setting. Very little movement of this adjuster is needed.
Jib Swivel Adjuster
Slide on a track sheet hook pointed forward
behind the downhaul adjuster. This will be connected in the rigging through
the guide to a hook on the jib rack. This is rarely used but will change the
level of the jib boom, the distance from the mast and make minor adjustments
to mast rake. Some hard mount this connection but on the SE boom it takes a
fitting to do both...so why not?
Sheetline Adjuster
Slide another track sheet hook point aft. This
too will be connected in the rigging.
Topping Lift Adjuster
Slide another track sheet hook point aft. This
too will be connected in the rigging.
Outhaul Clew Adjuster
Slide on a track sheet hook part without the
hook (the screw is slightly longer). We will make a clew hook when the jib
is installed and the height needed is determined.
Aft Insert Mount
Its main purpose is to provide a guide for the
topping lift line. When this is installed pre-drill a hole for a #2 sheet
metal screw under the boom and into the fitting shaft.
This completes this section. Move on to
assembly of the rig.
